Start the countdown! In just two weeks, we’ll have advanced copies of the first three Unmatched games available at the largest tabletop gathering in North America: Gen Con! This annual extravaganza attracts more than 60,000 people from around the world in a four-day celebration of gaming, geekdom, and the hobby that brings us together. Read on to see exactly what we’ve been working on:

Unmatched: Battle of Legends, Vol. 1 ($40), Robin Hood vs. Bigfoot ($25), and Bruce Lee ($15). Designed by Rob Daviau, JR Honeycutt, and Justin D. Jacobson. Art by Oliver Barrett. Pre-Orders open August 1st at 9 AM (CT)Expected to Ship in September 2019. Ships Worldwide.

First things first: Unmatched is more than a game. In fact, it’s an entire game system; a collaboration between Mondo and our brilliant partners at Restoration Games that allows players to stage epic battles between iconic characters from literature, film, myth, and legend.

Since the heroes and battlefields in each box are interchangeable, players are encouraged to configure a variety of matchups by pairing different fighters against one another or even swapping out the terrain prior to each fight. In the first three sets alone, there are 84 possible two-player battle scenarios! That number that will increase exponentially with each forthcoming release.

A cast of thematic sidekicks support the sculpted heroes found in each box, allowing players to surround, ambush, and distract opposing fighters. Additionally, since all heroes are unique, each is paired with their own deck of action cards beautifully illustrated by Oliver Barrett. Cards detail available attacks and skills, as well as distinctive character abilities that impact gameplay. Because card decks don’t refresh throughout the game, players need to manage their hands strategically to avoid exhaustion and time all attacks cleverly to optimize damage inflicted.

The battlefields in Unmatched are comprised of oversized circular spaces that can be easily viewed from all angles, even with a hero or sidekick placed upon them. This allows players to think ahead, planning their own moves and anticipating those of their opponents. Lines of adjacency and texturized color zones dictate character movement limitations as well as the targeting for both ranged and melee attacks.

The goal of the game is simple: survive long enough to deplete the opposing hero’s health completely, and be declared victorious! If you think you’re ready to test your skills on the battlefield, visit us at Gen Con in booth #3061 and be sure to stop in and visit Restoration Games in booth #355 as well; we’d love to hear what characters you want to play as (or against) in future sets.
